Area and Perimeter in Daily Life

4th Grade Math/Geometry

Standard(s) 4.MD.3

Allison Bartek, Linda Bartrug, Colleen Hunter

This geometry lesson is designed to be an interactive way for students at a fourth grade level to learn the formulas for area and perimeter.  It is also designed to show students how the formulas relate to daily life giving them relevance and meaning.  Included in the lesson are practice tasks for the computer and Geometer’s Sketchpad as well as hands-on activities to use in the classroom. www.ixl.com

How to Measure and Identify Similar Figures

7th Grade Math/Geometry

Standard(s) 7.G.1

Maggie Edwards, Tricia Arbaugh

The lesson deals with similar figures.  Students will be given coordinates for a cartoon character (Mug, Zug, Lug, and Glug) and be required to use a given rule to produce another cartoon character.  The student will then be able to recognize if the second character is similar to the original character.  The student will also be able to recognize when two figures are similar and when two figures are not similar.

Measure and Classify Angles

5th Grade

Standard(s) Classify 2 dimensional figures into categories based on their properties

Jennifer Blackburn, Katie Simpson, Donald Price, Danielle Kalinowski

This lesson begins with the students being read the story, "Greedy Triangles". To begin, students will be given a problem of the day (role play). Students will also relate clock hands to angles. Students will then learn to measure and classify angles.

Finding the Area of a Triangle

6th Grade
Standard(s) 6.G.1

Susan Bachmann, Sarah Moses, Stephanie McKinney

The lesson introduces students to finding the area of a triangle using the student’s previous knowledge, guided instruction, and a variety of technological tools.   It first involves the teacher introducing the lesson, the objectives, and showing examples.  Then the teacher guides the students through problems using the Smart board and the Geometer’s Sketchpad.  The students are next put into groups where they are given an activity (index cards) and assume more responsibility for their understanding of the concept.  Finally, the students work independently to solve problems.  For a fun connection to the lesson, we have listed a website that contains a rap song the students can sing that coincides with the area of a triangle.  Triangle Rap

Shapes

KG- 3rd Grades

Standard(s) Analyze, Compare, Create, and Compose Shapes

Jill Tucker, Terry Bartels, Wendy Lovell, Rebecca Danley

Shapes are all around us. We focus on shapes in the kitchen. The students sort circles and triangles in the form of pies. Once sorted, we deliver the pies to people around town.

Parts of a Circle

5 th Grade

Susan Sutton, Carla Filbert, Melissa Brown, Rick McDowell

Students will show understanding of the relationship among parts of a circle and apply the relationships to problem situations. Rick sings (adapts) Wheels on the Bus to "The circumference of the circle is "pi" times "d" all around the lid." Students are introduced to "pi" as "pi is 3 and a little bit".

Medians of a Triangle

Attachment

Grade 9 - 10

Maxine McClure, Joyce Cammilletti, David Lucci, Carolyn Gullen

The lesson is built to discover a relationship between the lengths of the medians in regard to the location of the centroid (point of intersection) using Geometer's Sketchpad.

Classification of Two-Dimensional Figures

5th Grade

Standard(s) G3, G4

Roxanne Starkey, Kelly Zeroski, Patty Lamantia, Jenny Dickinson

During this lesson the student will classify two–dimensional figures in hierarchy. The teacher will model triangle vocabulary, show triangles on the whiteboard/sketchpad and thinking-aloud. Students will explore properties of triangles at the interactive triangle activity at the Math is Fun website.

Area and Perimeter

Attachment

6th Grade

Standard(s) E 4,5,6

Angela Smith, Shawnee Arbaugh, Todd Smith, Ruth Rees, Donna McCasland

Students will build understanding of perimeter and area by designing bumper cars for an amusement company.  Students will investigate the relationship between these concepts by using multiple representations including modeling and data collection.

Pythagorean Theorem

7th Grade

Jason Ensinger, Kristin Granatir, Anthony DeFrances, Chris Dopp

Our 7th grade geometry lesson focuses on the Pythagorean Theorem.  The students will be able to identify the parts of a right triangle and distinguish between the legs and the hypotenuse.  The students will be able to explain why the formula works and apply their knowledge by finding the lengths of missing sides of right triangles.  Finally, the students will be able to apply their knowledge to answer OAA-style questions regarding the Pythagorean Theorem. A rap about the Pythagorean Theorem is used to provide a "hook" to help students remember the formula.

Construct Various Triangles

Grade 5

Will Luther, Diane Hoppel, Maureen Kaufman

This lesson is introduced by reading "The Greedy Triangle" to the students. Students ponder the statement, "The triangle is acute because ...".Students find and identify the types of triangles in the classroom .

Identification of Quadrilaterals

Attachments

4th Grade

Standard(s) Geometry and Spatial Sense 2,3

Donna Iachini, Chris Ballato, Ginger Bloomer, Diane Baker

Students will first work with identifying parallel lines and right angles. These features will be used to classify quadrilaterals. Students will do the quadrilateral "Family Tree" activitiy together. Students will complete an activity using the Patch Tool at the Illuminations website.

Line Segments, Rays, and Angles

4th Grade

Standard(s) 4.G.1

Megan Mallett, Jessica Dankert, Karen Padden, Robyn Scott

Students will be introduced to angles (right, obtuse, acute, and straight), as well as creating angles with the use of a protractor. Students will be taught using the GROR model.

Classifying Triangles by Angle Measures

4th Grade

Jennifer Starr, Jim Mort, Amy Sedgmer

In this two-day lesson, 4th grade students will identify acute, obtuse, right, and equiangular triangles based on their angle measures.  This lesson incorporates various forms of technology such as the Interactive Whiteboard (Triangle Sort),  Geometer’s Sketchpad or Illuminations Website (Angle Sums), and Web 2.0 (podcasts and wikispaces).  Students will participate in hands-on, motivational activities that involve independent and collaborative learning.  Ultimately, they will create an art project using triangles as a final assessment.

Angles and Lines

Attachments

5th Grade

Standard(s) OH 5-7 G.D.

Colleen Hunter, Amber Scott, Phyllis Ferris

Identify, describe and classify types of line pairs and angles (2-D and 3-D objects) The Mimio Notebook was included in the session. The camera IPEVO P2V was used to show additional documents. The Geometer's Sketchpad: Mondrian in Motion.

Describe and Create Plane Figures

Attachments

2nd Grade

Standard(s) OH.K-2.G.A.

Jennifer Aubrey, Sharon Patterson, Judy Burris, Rena

This series lesson is designed for second grade to introduce geometry skills specified in the common core standards.  It utilizes the smart board and geometry sketchpad technology.  The lessons can be used separately or as a unit taught over a week.
